Most frequent questions and answers

mediphone is a telemedicine service operated by local Family Physicians in Alberta.  

We use a variety of telemedicine tools including videoconference and phone consultations.

Yes it is!  Our physicians are paid by Alberta Health for each consultation.  There is no cost to you, and there are no hidden fees. 

After submitting the patient registration form, you will be waitlisted to be contacted by the next available physician.  

You may notice that the physicians’ phone number may be private, masked, or shows up as “no caller ID”.  They may verify some identifiers with you, however, we will NEVER ask for credit card information or any form of payment. 

In most cases, you will be contacted by phone, but if required, the physician may request a video conference sent by an email link

Wait times depend on the volume of requests from patients.  Due to the current pandemic, we are expecting longer wait times.  

After submitting your patient registration, you will be put in a queue for the next available physician.  You will not need to wait on the phone or stay on our website.  Just carry on with your day to day life and we will try contact you during the same day.

If more than one person in your household wishes to speak with the physician, or if you have questions pertaining to other members of your household, please complete a separate patient registration for each person. 

Please be sure to inform the physician that you have booked for more than one patient at the time of your call. 

Our physicians have access to netcare – the provincial medical record.  We will have access to your most recent prescriptions, lab and imaging results.  

We do not have access to your family physician’s charts, specialist records, or your physicians notes

Mediphone’s physicians are not meant to replace your family physician, nor is it meant to replace in person consultations.  

Our physicians will triage and offer medical advice.  If further work up is required, they will advise you on the best way to access care.  We do not order lab work, nor imaging investigations.  We do not send referrals to specialists.  

Based on our scope of practice, follow up is typically not required.  It will be at the discretion of the attending physician if further follow up is required.

Mediphone is meant to be a temporary care bridge during the pandemic.  It is not meant to replace your Family Physician or in person follow ups.  

We do not order labs or imaging.  We do not send referrals to specialists. 

Certain prescriptions will be refused.  These include, but are not limited to:

  • Narcotics
  • Triplicates
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Sleeping pills

Refills for other medications will be at the discretion of the attending physician.

Records are stored on a secure encrypted server.  The records are printed daily, and purged from the server.  Records are given to the attending physician for safe storage as per the College of Physicians of Alberta guidelines
